2021年，公視將推出改編自知名作家吳明益的同名小說《天橋上的魔術師》，故事以早在1992年拆除的中華商場為背景，講述九個孩子的成長故事，透過孩時記憶的共通點：天橋上的魔術師，透過時而真實、時而超現實的的記憶拼貼，尋求人生持續前進的曙光。

透過光陰的魔法，《天橋上的魔術師》將在時代塵土中敲損落塵埃的一切，再次招喚回來，書中的九段故事沒有一段結局是皆大歡喜，吳明益筆下陳述的人物無比寫實與真誠，就像淘洗過你我生活周遭角色的人生故事。
無論是擁有讓小黑人起身跳舞魔力的魔術師；從女廁抵達99樓的馬克；鎮瀾宮前不能刻得跟真獅子一樣，不然會跑走的石獅子；躲在衣櫃深處全身灰撲撲的大象；強尼•河流們篇章中，從橫擺的唱片中，一張張掀起來看，好像秘密疊著秘密般，播放著《無敵情報員》主題曲Secret Agent Man的哥倫比雅唱片行；小心翼翼豢養一隻透明金魚的特莉沙；為了照顧兩隻文鳥而在家中拼命踩蟑螂的兄妹檔；座落在舊書攤旁的唐先生西裝店；以及為了測試商場天台上的巨型霓虹燈，是否會液出繽紛的光流，不斷在一個個招牌砸出洞的阿卡。
這些故事，拎著一盞燈，探往一章章過去的台北日子，輝煌中透著伶仃。
1961年落成的中華商場，當年曾是全亞洲最大的百貨大廈，中華商場為8棟3層樓之建築，名稱分別以「忠、孝、仁、愛、信、義、和、平」取名，其中忠、孝兩棟樓多販賣家電用品，仁、愛兩棟樓多販賣民俗藝品，信、義、和三棟樓多販賣中國各地小吃，而和、平兩棟則多為成衣商家聚集。（此段節錄於公視「天橋上的魔術師」重現中華商場 3張老照片比對神還原！）直至1992年為了配合中華路改造計畫，中華商場正式宣告結束31年歷史。公視耗資8000萬，從當年的生活考究開啟田野調查，在汐止片場成功還原中華商場中的庶民生活、建築氛圍與時代細節。
《天橋上的魔術師》流光似水中有個片段形容真正第一家陽春麵令人印象深刻：
‘‘我那時候最喜歡坐在閣樓靠窗的那面吃麵，因為可以看到走在騎樓的人群。閣樓牆面也都釘了條狀的桌子，擺了一樣的小圓凳，牆上貼滿微縮的，不到五公釐大小的牛肉場海報。彼時我們都坐在這樣的海報前面，吃著熱呼呼的陽春麵，抬頭的時候常常就面對海報上女子的肚臍或雙乳，乳頭的部分通常會畫兩顆星星遮住，就彷彿是我們未可知的人生，仍然在前頭閃閃發亮似的。
我記得那家麵店老闆常常擤完鼻涕就在抹布上擦手，然後再用那塊抹布擦去碗公邊緣的湯汁，而後把拇指伸進湯裡端過來。但從來沒有客人對那個表示異議過。何況整條商場，只有他們家賣的花咁會中日在滾燙的牛肉湯裡燉煮因而飽含湯汁，咬下時香氣四溢，買了花干，還賺一口牛肉湯。’’
商場中小店的氣味、雜亂、污穢與油膩感，都從《天橋上的魔術師》中活了過來，中華商場矗立的三十年間，可說是不少台北人的生活重心，乘載台北人的記憶建築，但對與該時代建築擦肩而過的台北人而言，作家吳明益提及：「對比我年紀大的讀者來說，它的故事背景，也就是那八棟商場的『存在』是個話題；而對比我年輕的讀者來說，商場的『不存在』才是話題。」
但《天橋上的魔術師》打了一把鑰匙給讀者們，帶領我們走進那個時代真切的聚散哀歡，不論是99樓的撲簌迷離，還是永遠穿著一雙傘兵鞋的魔術師，抑或是那座連貫一個個臉龐的天橋，拿著鑰匙的我們，很難每個都通向預設的結局，正如書中所言的：「這世界上有太多用鑰匙打不開的東西。」但，看完這本書後，我們在某一個片段，彷彿某種魔術時刻，其實轉開了某些轉扭。
2020年，籌備四年的《天橋上的魔術師 圖像版》終於問世，漫畫家阮光民與小莊，透過文字小說的跨界轉化，與吳明益一起將故事的此岸，透過創作的解讀與想像，成功抵達了對岸，因兩個漫畫家繪畫不同的故事線，下港女子推薦可以先看吳明益的原小說，先從文字的推敲攀爬出各章主角的樣貌，再從漫畫家的圖像踏入故事氛圍；接著就可以期待2021年公視旗艦大戲，如何將時代故事，帶領大眾進入戲劇的三度空間。
